Welcome to the Mastermind Analysis review of WWE SummerSlam 2016. The thoughts and opinions expressed below are those of The Mastermind only, and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts and opinions of the entire F4R team. Let us know what you think in the comments, or by getting involved on Facebook! But for now, on with the show...
Pre-PPV Thoughts
We are finally here! It’s been a long time since Wrestlemania, but we are finally at Summerslam – the 3rd of the ‘big 4’ for 2016! The draft has happened, the rosters have been split, and we are poised for the first PPV since the split. For me, this is a very exciting thing. My WWE viewing relies heavily on the 1 Hour catch-up show on Sky1, but that only covers Raw. Smackdown gets zero hours of TV time in my house. So apart from reading the re-caps online, each monthly PPV is going to be my only chance to see the entire Smackdown roster. Combine that with the fact that Summerslam (along with all of the Big 4 PPVs) is being shown live at MK11 (Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes) and my hype levels are tiptoeing higher and higher. My grand theory behind the show this year is for all 3 members of the Shield to leave with a belt, so I’m excited to see if that plays out. My last thought is that last years’ Summerslam left me feeling largely deflated, but the past 12 months has seen so many changes and improvements, I am optimistic that this year will far surpass last year.
Pre-Show
The Vaudevillains, The Ascension, and Breezango vs The Hype Bros, The Usos, and American Alpha
Prediction: This match was announced after I made my initial predictions so I'm typing this during the wrestlers' entrances. I'm a big fan of a number of teams in the match, but I don't think the WWE are on the same page as me - every heel team on this match has been treated by a joke, so for me it's a no brainer - the face team will go over in this one.
Match Analysis: It was just a matter of time for that result to happen. Nothing wrong with the match, but nothing special. Every team had a chance to get their spots in, but again the Vaudevillains, The Ascension and Breezango - all very capable performers - pick up the loss. Will they ever mean anything??

Sami Zayn & Neville vs The Dudley Boys
Prediction: Another match that was thrown together at the last minute. I have no idea why this match is happening other than to get them on the show one way or another. I would usually go with the regular tag team of the Dudleys, but again they haven't really been taken seriously. So sod it, lets go with Zayn and Neville! Points for anyone who can explain how Sami Zayn wins the feud with KO, but goes on to do nothing, while KO gets a semi-main event position next to Y2J...?!
Match Analysis: Another potentially strong heel tag team beaten by a temporary tag team of 2 singles wrestlers... I'm watching the Kick Off Show the morning (well... afternoon) after seeing the main SummerSlam show live last night, and I am always baffled by established tag teams being beaten by make-shift teams (see: Opening match of the main show). But for what it was, it was fine. An easy pay cheque for them all.

Cesaro vs Sheamus
Prediction: I am a big fan of ‘Best of _’ series. The last one I can remember was Motor City Machineguns vs Beer Money for the TNA Tag Team Championships. That series was a belter, and with a little help from the bookers, Cesaro and Sheamus could pull a series of matches for the ages. I’m hoping they are given a few stipulations and it’s not merely a best of 7 singles matches. Generally speaking in the microcosm of Best Of series, the heel will always take the early advantage, so let’s go with Sheamus taking the victory to open the series.
Match Analysis: Firstly, I am disappointed that this was demoted to the pre-show. I am a big fan of both these guys, but they deserve to be showcased on the main show in my opinion. Now, the deck is being stacked against Cesaro, which makes his eventual win mean that little bit more. I can't wait to see where these two go with the series, I think it could be show stealing material!

Main Show
Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens
Prediction: In my opinion, Chris Jericho has been stale ever since he returned to the WWE for his most recent run. But adding the spice of Kevin Owens and all of a sudden Jericho has someone to bounce off. Owens’ is equally heelish, comedic, and well… Canadian as Jericho so these two could benefit each other in the long run. That said, Enzo and Cass are on the ascent to superstardom, so I’ll go with the Certified G’s over a cuppa’ haters.
Match Analysis: See above for a mini-rant about established teams being beaten. Enzo & Cass always seem to lose on the big stages, yet they continue to be one of the most over acts on the entire roster. You've got to feel bad for them in a way, but lets hope there's a return victory on the horizon for the G'!
[**1/2]
Sasha Banks © vs Charlotte
Prediction: While it’s arguable that Sasha’s big title win should have come at Summerslam instead of Raw a few weeks ago, Sasha walking into Brooklyn as the champ is a sure fire way to blow the roof off the building. With Dana Brooke barred from ring side, this could be the NXT-style womens match I have been begging to see on the main roster ever since Charlotte and Natalya tore it up way back when. The card is distinctly lacking gimmick matches this year, but this is one match that absolutely needs to be a simple 1 on 1 contest. No frills, no smoke, no mirrors. Just 2 women showing why they are the best in the world at what they do. Sasha for the win though!
Match Analysis: Wow, the opening half of this one was rough. Seeing Sasha just get dropped in the corner was difficult to watch bit I am glad she was able to continue with the match. They managed to bring it back with the super-top-rope hurricanrana and the diving knees to the outside, but the result still baffles me! If rumours are to be believed, then Sasha was banged up prior to the match and in need of some rest. Either way, the final stretch of the match was pretty awesome, it's just a shame Charlotte didn't tap!

The Miz © vs Apollo Crews
Prediction: We all know Apollo Crews is a gifted athlete in the ring, but has he been given any chance to really show who he is as a character? I felt his call up from NXT was way premature as he was still developing his persona and in-ring mannerisms. Compared to Crews, The Miz is as big as John Cena, and I honesty don’t see any other way than Miz retaining here again to despatch another contender-of-the-month.
Match Analysis: The strongest and most logical match of the night so far (barring Sheamus/Cesaro). Crews is a talented guy but we definately need to see more of his charachter to truly get behind him as a competitor. The Miz continues to look strong in his role, you can't really fault the guy for that, and since Maryse has re-joined him on screen he's looked far more comfortable in his role. Decent showing for the Smackdown brand really.

John Cena vs AJ Styles
Prediction: Here’s hoping this is the final match of this feud for now. I can see why their interactions have been focussed on AJ being on his own now, but surely they realise that The Club are on the same card, and therefore will be in the same building and more than able to interfere if they want to?! All logical loop-holes aside, there’s no reason this can’t be a contender for Match of the Night. I really hope we don’t get the usual Super Cena match where the feud ends with Cena going over. I’m calling for an AJ win. Please!
Match Analysis: If you ask me, the best matches leave you knackered just watching them. I feel absolutely exhausted after this match! Listen to the Figure4Radio Live SummerSlam podcast to hear my joy on the result of this match... I was fully expecting John Cena to win as standard, but the fact that AJ went over just made my night. Easily the best match of the night so far and I can't see anyone topping that if I'm being honest.

The New Day © vs The Club
Prediction: I almost can’t remember a time where The New Day weren’t tag team champions. I’m not sure of the total number of days their reign is currently at, but I bet it is HUGE. That said, The Club have brought out a hint of fire in the comedy act, and truth be told, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a change of champions in this match. I’m voting for The Club.
Match Analysis: This match was fine until Jon whateverhisnameis decided to get into the ring for no reason whatsoever. That's the second year in a row he's been involved in a title match and been more out of place than Brock Lesnar at a Be A Star convention. I loved the fire from Big E in his return and as a matter of fact, I don't mind New Day retaining via DQ - it showed they have a serious side underneath all the comedy.
[***1/2]
Dean Ambrose © vs Dolph Ziggler
Prediction: After my spiel on Reigns/Rusev, I’ll try and keep this short and sweet. Nothing against Ziggler, but it feels like a rushed return to glory. Generally things that are rushed aren’t designed for the long run, so I’m sticking with an Ambrose win to make it 2 for 2 for the former Shield members. Also, I love how Raw lost the most prestigious belt in the WWE to Smackdown, and instead of battling to get it back on the flagship show, they just create a new top belt and all of a sudden the WWE Championship is devalued. Bloody politics!!
Match Analysis: A really strong match between these 2, with the video package really setting up Ziggler as a strong contender for the belt. I saw something different in Ambrose tonight that could start to turn the tables in his favour as far as my opinions go. He showed a bit more sass and lunacy than I'm used to seeing. Let's hope I see more of whatever it is!

Carmella, Becky Lynch & Naomi vs Natalya, Alexa Bliss & Eva Marie (x)/Nikki Bella (y)
Prediction: At the time of writing this hasn’t been confirmed for the pre-show but it has pre-show written all over it. I can’t say I’m invested in any of the angles, and despite the match carrying multiple female-wrestling-crushes I can’t say I’m overly bothered who wins. Let’s go with the heel team to get the win. Why not!?
Match Analysis: Firstly, please don't mark me down for my false pre-show prediction... The match really served as a vehicle to re-establish Nikki Bella, although the performances flowed far better than the Womens match earlier in the night. It was a fine time filler, with everyone involved hitting their spots well.
[**]
Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor
Prediction: This is the most intriguing match-up of the night, and the match I fully expect to steal the show. In all honesty I’ve still not massively over on the Finn Balor character. Sure he can get the job done in the ring, but I’m yet to truly understand the hype around him. I also have an issue with the Demon side of his character. There seems to be no in-ring difference between Balor Club Finn and Demon King Finn. Look at someone like Foley, and the difference in his persona between characters like Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love. Each had their own mannerisms and moveset. When Cactus came out to play, you knew things were going to get violent; when Mankind was on the scene things usually got pretty freaky and twisted… But there’s zero difference between Balor and the Demon. I just don’t get it. Much as I’d love to see Finn get the win, I think this is a definite win for Seth. Finn making the jump from NXT to WWE Top Champion in the space of a few weeks just doesn’t seem something plausible. Doesn’t mean it won’t be a strong match though!
Match Analysis: Another suprising result, but as we all know - I don't mind suprises. The main body of the match was nothing special, and I still don't really know the difference between Demon Finn and Regular Finn. That said the tenacity shown by Finn in the closing sequence - hitting relentless stomps and shotgun dropkicks. I'm still not sure if Finn is ready to be front n centre of WWE, but all the best to him!

Rusev © vs Roman Reigns
Prediction: I have a triple-match theory going on with Summerslam at the moment. After Money in the Bank, every commentator across the WWE was telling the viewers how amazing it was that each member of the Shield held the WWE Championship in the same night. Combine that with Roman Reigns randomly dropping from the highest echelons down to the mid-card championship and it makes me wonder if they are lining up all 3 former Shield members to be champions simultaneously. Prior to Wrestlemania 30, I was a huge fan of Rusev’s work as the monster heel champion who was unbeatable. If we forget what happened between his 2 US Title streaks, then he is still at a place where I am digging his work and I much prefer him as a force of destruction rather than a comedic goon. Speaking of goons, am I the only one who I less annoyed by Roman Reigns vying for the US Championship? Personally, I think it’s the perfect belt to put on him to let him spend some time as a champion without making him out to be something he isn’t ready to be yet. Much as I’d love Rusev to retain, I’m sticking with my Shield theory, and going for a Roman win.
Match Analysis: OK, so this didn't turn out to be much of a match, but as I stated on the F4R Podcast, I saw a side of Roman Reigns that I liked, and that could be the way to get him over with the entire crowd. Rusev sold the attack really well, and I doubt we'll see a better spear this year.
[***1/2]
Brock Lesnar vs Randy Orton
Prediction: I am hoping this isn’t the last match of the night, because that would be a let down. In fact I’d be tempted to head home and watch it the following day! Despite being 2 of the WWE biggest starts, it doesn’t mean I find them exciting or entertaining in any way. I can already tell you each of the moves both Randy and Brock are going to use in the match. And call me old-fashioned, but that means I’m already bored by it all. If this was a random gimmick match then it might have some sort of intrigue, but it’s not. All we’ll see from Brock is a handful of German suplexes, maybe an overhead belly-to-belly… and an F5. Randy will do his rope-hung DDT, a twisting powerslam, a sidewinder backbreaker, and maybe a top rope superplex. Apart from obligatory punches, kicks and clotheslines, that is all you’re likely to get folks. Sorry! Wake me up when it’s over… Oh yeah, predictions…? Erm… Brock?
Match Analysis: Wow. I don't quite know what to say... It's kind of the second screwy finish to a SummerSlam in a row? I like the fact that a result was announced and it was decisive, but there's so many questions in my head - was that the way it was planned to go? Did Brock go into business for himself? Did Randy blade, or was is hard way? I'll be watching it all back again to analyse and try to get a better grasp on the situation. BUT, it was an interesting end to the night, and despite the flat end, it was a damn sight better than last year.
